“Hollyfang!!” Freefang’s voice rang out. “Where are you?! I give up!” The silver tabby slumped to the ground. “It’s not fair if you can’t see!!” Freefang pointed out. “Fine. I’m coming out.” Hollyfang crawled out from under the heather and her black pelt glinted against the moon. “I’d better get back to Cloudclan.” Hollyfang said. “See you at the gathering?”
“Of course.”
Hollyfang dashed up the hill and out of sight.
“Finally. You’re back.” Hollyfang turned to see her mentor, Dareclaw. Hollyfang dipped her head and hoped he wasn’t suspicious. “Where were you?” He prompted.
“Uhhh uhhh just out hunting.” She lied.
“And you’ve caught nothing?”
“I didn’t see any prey.”
“Oh well. It no longer matters!! We must find some food for the clan.” Hollyfang sides heaved with exhaustion. “Okay.” She muttered. They walked up the hill an into the darker parts of the forest, near Ninjaclan. “Why are we here?”
“Blackstar wished of it.”
Hollyfang walked near the border and opened her mouth to smelle fresh Ninjaclan scent. “Do you smell that?!” She asked her mentor.
“Yes. Fresh Ninjaclan.” He opened his mouth and caught the smell of Freefang, Hollyfang’s other-clanly brother. Oh no. Freefang’s scent! I hope he didn’t catch--
“It’s Freefang!” Dareclaw gasped with disgust.
“That stupid Ninjaclan cat doesn’t know what he’s up against! That silly apprentice!!”
He hissed.
Hollyfang felt a hiss rumble in her throat.
“Are you hissing at me?!” He growled.
“Uhhh no. Sorry, Dareclaw.”
Dareclaw turned his head.
Oh no. I see him! She thought.
The silver cat jumped on a rabbit nearby and grasped it in his teeth.
“Oh hey---” He started but stopped when he sensed Dareclaw.
“Hollyfang, Go fetch some mice.”
“What are you going to do to him?? Are you going to hurt him?!”
“I said GO!”
Hollyfang bounded through the woods, uncertainty in her mind.
He’s gonna hurt him. I know he will! She thought.
Then she had an idea.
Maybe I can get over there and see if he will hurt him.
She crept slowly, keeping her weight on her haunches and peered over the cliff.
Dareclaw and Freefang were talking. She pricked her ear to hear them.
“Well you are a fine hunter.” Dareclaw said.
“Thanks. It’s not easy for a Ninjaclan cat to be able cat to catch rabbits, especially cause I‘m blind!”
“Very impressive. So, how do you know Hollyfang?”
Hollyfang’s fur bristled.
“Um… One of my clanmates had a fight with her. I met her at last gathering, and we became aquantices.”
“Oh okay. HOLLYFANG!!”
Hollyfang quickly realized she hadn’t caught anything. She pounced on two mice and jumped off the cliff.
“Hello, Dareclaw, Freefang.”
She flicked her tail to show thanks. “Well, let’s head back now, Hollyfang.”
Hollyfang nuzzled her brother and bounded past Dareclaw into the rising sun.
Hollyfang was eager to get some sleep.
“Hey, Hollyfang!!” Russetfur bounded to her.
“Hey, Russetfur.”
“The gathering is in 2 hours!”
The Gathering was a time when all four clans gathered together in peace, and discussed their issues.
Hollyfang walked into her den and slumped down on her nest.
Chapter 2
“It’s time we go.” She felt her friend Russetfur nudge her.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.” Hollyfang leaped out of her den and landed on a mouse.
“Yum!” She picked it up with her fangs and threw it to the pile.
Blackstar flicked his tail and Cloudclan, the clan of seven, walked off into the forest.
“Attention!” Yowlstar, the leader of Ninjaclan spoke out. “Are all the clans here?” Every cat looked around. “Yes.” Heatherstar said. “Then let us begin!” Hillstar called out. All four clan leaders, Blackstar of Cloudclan, Yowlstar of Ninjaclan, Heatherstar of Tornadoclan, and Hillstar of Lightningclan jumped on the bigrocks.
Hollyfang looked around for Freefang.
“Hollyfang!!” She turned and saw him.
“Hey!!!” She nuzzled him.
“Try to catch me!!” Freefang bounded into the woods.
“I’m coming for ya!!” She jumped out into the blackness of the woods.
She saw him, crouched low behind a fern. She jumped, and he scrambled away.
“I almost had ya, too!” She looked around. Why does the forest smell like this?
She saw her brother, sniffing the air.
“Hollyfang what’s that?!”
“I don’t know.”
“It smells like…….” He shuddered. “Fire.”
Hollyfang bounded farther into the woods. “Oh my gosh!!” She stared at the red flames, the black smoke clogging her throat.
“Hollyfang! Let’s get out of here!!”
Hollyfang dashed back to the gathering, her breath coming as a wheeze.
“The….the forest….forest is….forest….”
“Spit it out!” Dareclaw yelled.
“F-follow me!” She jumped back into a run and saw the fire.
Suddenly, a tree collapsed on her hind leg.
“Oh Starclan!!” She cried. “My leg!!”
“Hollyfang? I’m coming!” Dareclaw came in, and pushed the tree off. Hollyfang was bleeding, bad. Dareclaw picked her up and started running back. Dareclaw stopped, he breathed in heavy and sensed the fire behind him. “Run.” He said as he set her down.
“Your staying here?” She gasped. “The flames could kill you!!”
“GO!”
Hollyfang ran, her face turning wet with tears.
She jumped into the gathering.
“Someone help Dareclaw!!” She screamed.
Everyone just looked at her as if she was crazy.
“Here. Me and Leafpool will go.” Runningpond spoke out. The large tabby and the smaller one dashed into the woods.
Everyone stared at her. “What?!” She mewed. “Get on with your business!!” The cats turned away and one meow stood out loudest. “I’m so glad she doesn’t have an apprentice. She was a kittypet anyway!!” Hollyfang just wanted to walk over there, and rip the fur off Darkstripe. Suddenly, Runningpond appeared, the dead Dareclaw hanging from his mouth.
“What happened?” Hollyfang felt her eyes swell up.
“A deputy of Ninjaclan attacked. I fought him off while Runningpond tried to help Dareclaw. But, Dareclaw didn’t make it out.” Leafpool explained. Now she knew it was true. The Cloudclan’s deputy, her own mentor was now gone. She could not believe it!
“W-what?!” She looked at the ground. “You’re joking.”
“Blackstar. Who is new deputy?” Runningpond’s eyes gleamed.
“I guess….Well, Runningpond, I didn’t think Dareclaw would leave us so unexpectedly…So….Runningpond….” Blackstar sighed. “You will be Deputy.”
Chapter 3
“What?” Hollyfang glared at her leader in disbelief.
“Yes, Hollyfang. Runningpond is one of our most fiercely loyal warriors. He is deputy now, and hopefully will be until he passes on to Starclan."
